I have Jewish and Lakota in my ancestry.
I was born with Tourette's Syndrome which in layman's terms means I'm a spastic. I wasn't correctly diagnosed until I was a young adult and no two schools/psychologists/doctors could agree on what it was that made me a freak. In special ed., I was discouraged from wanting to be a psychiatrist or a writer (the two areas that interested me) and told VoTech was my only real hope. A plummer, since I was afraid of electricity, gas, fire, heights, widths, knives, saws, and especially other people. At seven my parents were told I was so severely retarded I would never learn to read or write. I did learn to read and write, but on my own over a summer. I could learn, school just couldn't teach me. I got mostly Ds and was usually passed so the teacher didn't have to deal with me again. I never made it to high school.
After learning how to teach myself, I became a much better college student, graduating with a 3.89.
Today I make my living as a poet. Three collections of my poetry have been published and I'm under contract for one more. As well, I edited an anthology of political activist poetry called, Will Work For Peace that did very well. I tour, performing poetry, teaching workshops, meeting and interacting with the most amazing writers alive. I do what I can to promote, encourage, and support other talented writers wherever I find them. I completed a novel that I'm hoping a publisher will pick up and I'm well into a second.
I love five beautiful, wonderful children -- Alex and Sterling, who are biologically mine from my wife Linda, Verdi and Bear, who came with my partner Rose, and Peter Jasper Lebana Manawyddan Axel Drake, who we made together. The eight of us are learning how to create and maintain an unconventional family with love, kindness and respect.
I am Unitarian Universalist, bisexual, polyamorous, liberal, anti-war, pro-choice, anti-death penalty, pro-freedom, pro-thinking, and pretty outspoken both in my work and in my life.
I identify as trans-everything and prefer friends and partners that also transcend gender, age, color, body type.
